How Botox works
Botox Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) is a prescription medicine. Small amounts injected into specific muscles relax them, so the skin over them creases less. It doesn’t add volume or fill lines that are there when your face is at rest; that’s what filler is for.
Treatment areas
The FDA has approved Botox Cosmetic for temporarily improving:
- Frown lines between the eyebrows
- Forehead lines
- Crow’s feet
- Vertical neck bands
Other common uses, such as a lip flip, softening a gummy smile or slimming the jaw muscle, are off-label. Off-label use is legal and common, but it means the FDA hasn’t reviewed that use. We’ll tell you which is which before you decide.
What Botox costs
Botox is priced by the unit, and the number of units depends on the area and on you. These are the FDA-labeled doses, as a guide:

Many people need less than the labeled dose, and some need more. You’ll get your number and price at the consultation, before anything is injected.

What to expect
Treatment takes about 10 to 15 minutes, with a few small injections. Most people go straight back to their day. You’ll start to see a change within a few days, with the full effect at about two weeks, and it typically lasts three to four months. We check in at two weeks and adjust if needed.
Afterward: stay upright and avoid rubbing the area or heavy exercise for the rest of the day.
Risks
Common side effects are bruising, redness or tenderness at the injection sites and headache. Less often, an eyelid or eyebrow droops for a few weeks.
Botox carries an FDA boxed warning: its effect can spread beyond the injection area and cause symptoms such as muscle weakness, drooping eyelids, blurred vision, or trouble swallowing, speaking or breathing, hours to weeks after treatment. This hasn’t been confirmed at the doses used for cosmetic lines, but if any of it happens, get medical care right away.
Botox isn’t for you if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, have a muscle or nerve condition such as myasthenia gravis, or have an infection where you’d be treated. Tell us about every medicine you take, especially muscle relaxants, blood thinners and certain antibiotics.
Common questions
How long does Botox last? Usually three to four months. Timing varies from person to person.
Does it hurt? It feels like quick pinches. Most people don’t need numbing.
Will I look frozen? Not if the dose fits you. We start conservatively and adjust at your follow-up.
