Hormone deficiency can drive sugar cravings

Hormone-driven conditions such as menopause, andropause, and menstrual periods can sometimes drive a person’s cravings for sweets and snacks that are high in carbs. Though sugar cravings are sometimes casually joked about during these times in our lives, they can actually indicate major deficiencies in estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone.

In addition to causing a boost in sugar cravings, hormone imbalances can also result in moodiness, fatigue, insomnia, and a decrease in sexual libido. Men who experience a decrease in hormone levels during andropause can experience erectile dysfunction, weight gain, and high blood pressure, and can go on to develop type 2 diabetes.

Do you suffer from sugar cravings due to hormone deficiency?

Take a look at the following symptoms to determine whether you might suffer from sugar cravings as a result of low hormone levels.

For women:

  • Do you have a history of PMS?
  • If pre-menopausal, do you suffer from anxiety, depression, irritability, and bloating in the week before your period?
  • Have you had ovarian surgery or a hysterectomy?
  • Do you have a low sex drive?
  • Do you have decreased vaginal lubrication?
  • Do you generally experience insomnia, headaches, and hot flashes?

For men:

  • Do you have a low sex drive?
  • Do you typically feel depressed or unmotivated?
  • Do you frequently experience erectile dysfunction?
  • Do you have high cholesterol?
  • Do you have high blood pressure?
  • Do you have type 2 diabetes?
  • Are you overweight?
