Changes in hormonal balance following pregnancy

During pregnancy, a woman will experience a number of different hormonal changes as her body and uterus prepare for the growth of a healthy fetus. The surge in hormones throughout pregnancy will often cause women to experience mood swings, irritability, extreme happiness or sadness, and sometimes, even depression.

As a result of hormone imbalance, women will begin to suffer from common and uncomfortable pregnancy side-effects as early as several days after becoming pregnant. For example, morning sickness and nausea are often triggered by a surge in the hormone hCG, whereas high estrogen levels can lead to excess weight gain. Changes in a women’s endorphin levels can also lead to feelings of fatigue and moodiness.

After giving birth, the hormone levels in women are generally expected to return to normal in the days and weeks that follow pregnancy. However, some women may continue to face problems with hormonal balance indefinitely — especially if they fail to lose the excess weight they gained during pregnancy or fail to exercise and adhere to a healthy diet.

If hormone imbalance is not corrected after pregnancy, mothers can suffer from a variety of health problems, including:

  • Postpartum depression
  • Weight gain
  • Moodiness and irritability
  • Insomnia and problems with sleeping
  • Fatigue
  • Low sex drive

Mothers who give birth to twins, or multiples, are often at higher risk for experiencing hormonal imbalance following pregnancy as a result of their bodies generating additional hormones to support the growth of more than one fetus. However, all mothers who are unable to regulate their hormones following pregnancy can benefit from bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. Estrogen hormone pellets by BioTE are administered subcutaneously and will release hormones into the bloodstream consistently over time as needed. Women can then get back to enjoying motherhood without having to experience any of the negative side effects associated with hormone imbalance.

Rock Creek Wellness offers BioTE hormone pellet therapy — a BHRT treatment that uses hormones derived from natural plant sources to replicate the body’s normal hormonal levels. Request your free consultation today to learn more about how BHRT can enhance your quality of life following pregnancy.
