Here are five different foods you should start eating for breakfast to reverse aging and prolong your youth and vitality.
Blueberries are known to have one of the highest antioxidant capacities when compared to all other fruits and vegetables, and can help fight off free radicals that can lead to cancer and damage our telomeres — the structures of our DNA responsible for the aging process. Blueberries are also rich in polyphenols, which is a compound that can improve your motor skills and stave off heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer.
One study in particular published in the Journal of the American Heart Association found that women who ate high amounts of blueberries were at a 32 percent lower risk for heart disease than women who ate blueberries only once per month, or not at all.
When it comes to nutrition, eggs are often surrounded by controversy because of their high cholesterol content. However, eggs are high in “good” HDL cholesterol, and are usually only bad for your health if you fry them in foods such as butter and lard — both of which are high in “bad” LDL cholesterol. Eggs contain a number of vitamins and nutrients, including all the essential B vitamins, folic acid, biotin, and choline — the latter of which can protect your memory and boost cognitive function. Eggs also contain the compounds lutein and zeaxanthin, which have been proven effective at preventing vision loss and impairment.
If you need a caffeine boost, swap out coffee for tea. Teas contain a number of antioxidants that contribute to anti-aging and promote overall wellness. Although black and white teas are great for your health, green tea has been associated with the highest number of anti-aging benefits in comparison. Green tea is rich in an antioxidant called EGCG, which has the ability to rejuvenate skin cells and fight wrinkles to result in younger, smoother-looking skin. Green tea also contains other types of compounds that can fight against type 2 diabetes by regulating blood sugar levels, and ward off cancer by reducing inflammation.
Grapefruits are associated with a number of anti-aging benefits, most notably lowering bad cholesterol levels while at the same time boosting good cholesterol levels. Grapefruits are rich in vitamin C, which supports immune system function, and is rich in an antioxidant known as lycopene, which fights free radicals and reduces the risk for tumor growth.
A study published in the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that when combined with green tea, pink grapefruit has the ability to reduce a man’s risk of prostate cancer by 86 percent. In regards to women’s health, grapefruit pulp has been shown to contain glucarates, which are compounds that can help prevent breast cancer. Squeeze grapefruit juice and pulp into your morning cup of green tea to benefit from this powerful anti-aging combination.
If you’re not that into tea and grapefruit juice, drink a glass of pomegranate juice with your breakfast instead. Studies have shown that drinking just one glass of pomegranate juice per day can reduce the appearance of wrinkles while also preventing heart disease and relieving stress. Make sure that the pomegranate juice you buy is organic or lacks any added sugar and other artificial ingredients — otherwise, your body may not benefit from this nutrient-rich fruit.
