If you searched for exosomes for hair loss, this is the treatment you are looking for, described accurately. Exosomes are a type of extracellular vesicle: tiny particles released by cells that carry proteins and other signals between cells. The products we use on the scalp are umbilical cord–derived tissue products from FDA-registered, AATB-accredited tissue banks: a connective tissue matrix product and an extracellular matrix product. We do not call them exosomes, because their makers do not, and because no exosome product is FDA approved for any use. What they are: screened, lot-tested tissue products that we place directly into thinning areas of the scalp to supplement and support the tissue there.
Who this is for
This treatment is for men and women with thinning hair, a widening part, a receding hairline or early pattern hair loss who want a non-surgical option and are prepared to give it several months. The best candidates still have active follicles in the thinning area; hair that is thin is a better starting point than skin that has been smooth for years.
It is less likely to help, and we will say so, if an area has been bald for a long time, if the loss is the scarring kind, or if it is being driven by something that needs its own attention: thyroid disease, iron deficiency, a medication, recent illness or surgery, or a hormonal change. Hair loss is a symptom before it is a cosmetic problem, and it deserves an actual evaluation.
Start with the cause, not the needle
This is where being a medical clinic matters. Before recommending scalp treatment we look at your history and, where it makes sense, order labs: thyroid, iron stores, and the hormones that affect hair in men and women. We are a hormone clinic; if your hair loss is hormonal, treating the hormones is the honest first step and scalp injections alone would be selling you the wrong thing. We will also talk through the established options, minoxidil and, for men, finasteride, which have decades of evidence behind them and can be used alongside this treatment.
What we use, and how the visit goes
- Consultation. Scalp examination, history, baseline photographs under consistent lighting, and labs if indicated. We agree on the areas to treat and what a realistic result looks like for you. The consultation is free.
- Numbing. A topical anesthetic, and for most patients a small local anesthetic block, so the injections are comfortable.
- Injections. The tissue matrix products are injected in a grid of small, shallow injections across the thinning areas. This is the core of the treatment.
- Microneedling. We then microneedle over the treated area. The microchannels help the product reach the skin evenly and prompt the scalp’s own repair response.
- Home. The visit takes about an hour. You can go back to your day. Wait until the next day to wash your hair or use styling products, and avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
What to expect over time
Hair grows in slow cycles, so this is not a treatment with a quick reveal. If your scalp responds, the earliest sign is usually less shedding, followed by finer new hairs in the treated areas, followed by hair that looks fuller and thicker over three to six months. We compare photographs at each visit so the judgement is based on evidence, not impression.
Most patients start with one or two sessions a few months apart, then decide with us whether periodic maintenance is worthwhile. Some patients see a change they are happy with; some see little. Results vary and cannot be guaranteed, and we would rather tell you that at the start than after you have paid for a series.
Risks
Expect scalp tenderness, some swelling and possibly small bruises for a few days, and occasionally a headache the day of treatment. Uncommon risks include infection at the injection sites and a temporary increase in shedding as follicles shift cycles. Because the products are donated human tissue, there is a very small risk of an immune or allergic reaction and a screening-reduced but not zero risk of disease transmission. Long-term data on these products are limited. We review your medications, including blood thinners, before treatment.
Cost
Hair restoration is cash-pay and not covered by insurance. It is offered with both tissue matrix products or with the extracellular matrix product alone, which costs less. Pricing depends on the version, the size of the area and the number of sessions, and is given in writing at your consultation. Labs, if ordered, are billed separately.
Frequently asked questions
Is this an exosome hair treatment? It is what most clinics mean by that phrase. We use the products’ accurate names because we want you to know exactly what is being injected into your scalp.
How is this different from PRP for hair? PRP is made from your own blood at each visit, and its quality varies with your age and health. The tissue products we use are the same lot-tested product every time and require no blood draw. There are no head-to-head trials showing one is better than the other; we changed for consistency. Can I keep using minoxidil or finasteride? Yes, and we generally encourage it. The treatments work in different ways.
Will this replace a hair transplant? For a large, long-established bald area, no. For thinning, it is a reasonable non-surgical option and can also be used to support the scalp after a transplant.
